Writing Assignment:
All three summer readings present the topic of young characters seeking love, and happiness in their strict societies, while attempting to maintain their distinctly different personalities. Select any two characters from TWO of the three novels, and in a well-developed 2-3 page essay, compare how their personalities made things easier or more difficult for them to achieve their goals. Were they successful in the end? Do you foresee more trouble or ease in their futures beyond the ending of their novels? What potential societal or cultural rules made the personalities, qualities, or goals of the characters a problem/struggle or benefitted them?
You will be graded on:
- Proper introduction and conclusion
- Inclusion of at least two characters from two of the three books
- Use of evidence and support from at least two of the three novels with proper citation (author’s last name page#)
- Do not simply summarize
- Essay length
- Adherence to the conventions of standard English and grammar
- Typed in Times New Roman 12 point font; double-spaced; MLA format

What does the time period have to do with how the marriages play out? What effects might social status and wealth play on who gets married to whom and how? Given the struggles or ease, what is the outcome of the relationship/marriage?
